In case you’re wondering what the issue is, what needs to be shut down, it’s these guys and gals:
Blackface and Minstrelsy are an affront to many people, particularly African-Americans whose parents and grandparents had to suffer the denigration and indignities of Jim Crow and blackface’d entertainment.
However, here in Japan, that history is mostly unknown…and as a result some entertainers seeking to pay homage to black music and culture will do so in blackface.
One such group is called Rats & Star. They, along with girl group, Momoiro Clover Z, will be performing, in blackface, on a nationally televised program on Fuji-TV called “Music Fair” on March 7th.
While we respect Fuji-TV’s obligation to bring entertaining acts to their audience, and Rats & Star’s desire to salute black musicians and culture, blackface minstrelsy is NOT the way to go about it.

Why? Because it is a painful and shameful chapter in the history of the people they’re intending to pay homage to. Minstrel shows lampooned black people as dim-witted, lazy, buffoonish, superstitious, and happy-go-lucky slaves. It serves as an ugly reminder to many of the most regrettable chapter in American history, and while it should not be forgotten, it should not be repeated, either. And thus it no longer appears in American media.
We’d like to think Rats & Star and the other perpetrators of this form of entertainment are unaware of that distressing history, and are simply appropriating and profiting from black music and culture. Nevertheless, just as Japanese do not want other countries, intentionally or otherwise, mocking Japanese culture and sensibilities, such are the desires of all people, whether living here in Japan or abroad.
Many of us non-Japanese in Japan have come to think of this country as our home, and we see the Japanese people as more than our hosts, but as our friends and family. The last thing we’d like to see is shame and humiliation heaped upon our home over a misunderstanding. And with the approach of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, the last thing Japan needs is the stigma of being so culturally isolated and aloof that you can ignore the cultural sensibilities of so many people.
And that is exactly what will happen if this minstrel show airs, and if such behavior continues unabated. Japan will be viewed by the world, including many foreigners who live here, as culturally insensitive, disrespectful, ignorant, and too obtuse to change. This is a shame because we would otherwise think the very best of Japan and the Japanese. In fact, many Japanese also find such acts foolish and offensive.
If you agree, please sign this petition and let Fuji-TV know that airing a modern day blackface minstrel show caters to the lowest common denominator and is unworthy of the Japan we know and love. A better, more peaceful world begins with making an effort to respect the people living in that world.

「Blackface(ブラックフェイス)」というフェイスペイ ントで顔を黒くする行為は、様々な人々にとって、とても馬鹿にし ている失礼な行為と受けとめられることがあります。特に人種差別 を経験した両親や祖父母を持つアフリカ系アメリカ人にとって、「 Blackface(ブラックフェイス)」は侮辱以外の何物でも ありません。 しかし日本ではアメリカの人種差別の歴史についてあまり知られて ないので、黒人に対する尊敬を表そうとフェイスペイントを使って 顔を黒く塗るグループがいくつかあります。３月７日にフジテレビ の「Music Fair」という全国で放送される番組に出演予定のグループに「 Rats & Stars」というグループがあり、「Momoiro Clover Z」と一緒に顔を黒く塗って出演をすることになっています。
フジテレビ局が視聴者のために様々な演者を起用し面白い番組を制 作しようとしていることや、「Rats & Stars」が黒人の音楽家や文化に対し尊敬の意を表しようとし ていることは尊重しますが、「ブラックフェイス」を用いて表現す ることは良くないやり方だと思います。何故なら、 この行為がまさにアメリカの黒人の歴史上、とても辛い辱めを受け ていた時代に行われていた行為と同じだからです。
19世紀のアメリカでは「ミンストレル・ショー」と呼ばれる大衆 演劇が行われており、その中では白人の役者がわざと顔を黒く塗り 黒人に扮し、黒人に対する偏見をもとに、 黒人は愚かでだらしなく、下品で楽天的な奴隷だということをアピ ールをしていたのです。このことはアメリカの歴史上最も残念な出 来事であり、忘れられるべきでも繰り返されるべきでもありません 。
日本人の皆さんが、他の国の人々から意図的であってもなくても、 日本の文化や歴史・伝統を馬鹿にされたくないのと同様に、私たち も「ブラックフェイス」をされることで馬鹿にされたくありません 。 「Rats & Stars」や他の似た行為を行っているグループは、こうした悲 惨な歴史を知らずに無知にも同じ過ちを繰り返すことで黒人の音楽 ・文化から利益を得ているのだと考えるほかありません。
日本に住んでる多くの外国人は日本のことを第二の故郷と思い、日 本人のことを友達や家族のように思っています。ですから、このよ うな誤解によって大好きな日本が恥をかくのを見たくないのです。
2020年の東京オリンピックも近づいてきており、日本が自分た ちのことに夢中になりすぎて他の国の文化や歴史・考え方に対して 敬意を払うことができないといった汚名を手にすることは、 一番避けたいことだと思います。
もし実際に「Music fair」で顔を黒く塗った彼らがパフォーマンスを行っている模 様が放送され、今後もこのような行為が繰り返されるのなら、これ が現実のものになってしまうでしょう。
日本は世界中から、文化的に繊細さに欠け、無礼あり、非常に無知 で鈍感な国であり、日本を応援しようとしている日本に住む外国人 を含む多くの人々からの働きかけによっても変わることのできない 国だと思われてしまうでしょう。
事実、多くの日本人もこれがいかに無礼で馬鹿げた行為だと、同じ ように感じることでしょう。
もしこれに同意いただけるのなら、この請願に署名をお願いします 。
これにより、フジテレビに対し、現代においてもなお、この「 ブラックフェース」の演奏を上演することは、我々がよく知る愛す べき日本のイメージを損う恥ずべき行為だとうことを伝えてたいと 思います。
平和でより良い世界を実現するには、人々がお互いを尊重しあうよ う努めることから始まるのだと思います。
